Kyoto Sangyo University
Living Alone Guide
Kyoto Sangyo University brings its faculties together at the Kamigamo-Motoyama campus in Kita Ward. Where you should live depends heavily on how you combine subway, bus, Eizan Railway and bicycle travel.
Bottom line: KSU students choose between living near campus and living at a transport hub.
The official campus address is Kamigamo-Motoyama, Kita Ward. From Kyoto Station or Shijo, common routes use the Karasuma subway line to Kokusaikaikan or Kitaoji and then a bus; from Demachiyanagi, Eizan Railway to Nikenchaya plus shuttle bus is another option.Kyoto Sangyo University: Access
*Based on 15,694 students whose high-school prefecture could be identified. “Outside Kinki” excludes Shiga, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, Nara and Wakayama. 385 students listed as “Other” are excluded from the percentage calculation.
1. Four areas to consider for living alone
1 Kamigamo / campus area
For students who want the shortest possible commute. It is easy to make campus the center of daily life, and a walkable or bike-friendly property can reduce everyday burden. Check supermarkets and evening bus service, not just station distance.
2 Kitaoji
For students who want easy access to both campus and central Kyoto. Karasuma subway and bus connections make Shijo and Kyoto Station easy to reach. The university also provides access guidance from Kitaoji Bus Terminal.
3 Nikenchaya
For students who want to commute mainly by Eizan Railway. The university provides a free shuttle from Nikenchaya Station to campus. It also works well if you often travel toward Demachiyanagi.
4 Demachiyanagi
For students who value daily convenience and a Kyoto neighborhood atmosphere beyond campus. Eizan Railway and Kyoto Bus expand your daily range toward Sakyo Ward. The commute is longer, so test the route against your actual class times.
2. A university with many students from outside Kinki
In May 2026 university data, 5,441 of 16,079 enrolled students attended high school outside the six Kinki prefectures. That geographic spread helps indicate the pool of students who may need new housing in Kyoto, though it does not directly equal the number living alone.
3. What KSU students should check when apartment hunting
- Morning commute route:If using a bus, check travel time at the actual class start time.
- Bicycle practicality:Check hills and bicycle parking in person.
- Shopping environment:Check distance to supermarkets and drugstores, not just campus.
- Access to central Kyoto:Compare subway and Eizan connections for part-time work and weekends too.
