The Appeal of Kamigyo Ward:
Living Guide

From Kyoto Gyoen to Imadegawa, Horikawa, Nishijin and Marutamachi, Kamigyo is not simply a place to admire 'old Kyoto'—it is a neighborhood where everyday life continues right beside history. This guide looks at Kamigyo as a place to live, combining central convenience with the Garden's expansive greenery.

In Kamigyo, Kyoto's history is not just scenery—it becomes your address.

Kamigyo lies near the center of Kyoto City. It is a relatively compact ward bounded roughly by Kuramaguchi-dori to the north, Marutamachi-dori to the south, the Kamo River to the east and the Kamiya River area to the west. Within it are Kyoto Gyoen, Shokoku-ji, Kitano Tenmangu, Nishijin and many other landmarks of Kyoto's history and culture.

Kamigyo's appeal as a place to live is not limited to history. The eastern side offers easy access to the Karasuma Subway Line, Nishijin and Senbon rely effectively on bus routes, and the area around Kyoto Gyoen offers a quieter setting. You can choose a neighborhood to match your lifestyle.

1. Kyoto Gyoen becomes your neighborhood's great green space

Kyoto Gyoen is a national garden of about 65 hectares surrounding the Kyoto Imperial Palace and Kyoto Sento Imperial Palace, measuring roughly 700 meters east–west and 1,300 meters north–south. Japan's Ministry of the Environment says the grounds contain around 100,000 trees and are used for walking, relaxation, and encounters with nature and history.

One of the pleasures of living in Kamigyo is using this space not as a sightseeing destination but as everyday greenery for a morning walk or a stop on the way home. Few central Kyoto neighborhoods offer such a dramatic sense of openness.

Large green spaces in the city center

Thanks to Kyoto Gyoen, even in Kyoto's dense center you can live within easy reach of open sky and trees.

Easy access to the Karasuma Line

Around Imadegawa and Marutamachi, the Karasuma Subway Line can anchor daily travel, making Shijo and Kyoto Station easy to reach.

Nishijin's traditional urban life remains

Head west and you enter Nishijin, an area shaped by its textile history, where machiya townhouses, shops and homes intermingle.

Easy cycling access to central Kyoto

The ward is relatively compact, making a bicycle-based lifestyle—including trips toward Shijo and Kawaramachi—quite practical.

2. Life in Kamigyo changes from east to west

今出川・御所北

Home to Doshisha University and Shokoku-ji, this area has convenient access to Imadegawa Subway Station. It works well for students living alone and for commuters who prioritize subway access. Near Kyoto Gyoen, central-city convenience can coexist with a calmer atmosphere.

府庁・丸太町周辺

With government facilities and medical institutions nearby and easy access toward Marutamachi Subway Station, this area suits people seeking a stable central-Kyoto lifestyle more than a student-town atmosphere.

Some streets are farther from subway stations, but bus routes are useful and older homes, machiya and shops remain mixed together. It is an appealing option if you want the feeling of living in a distinctly Kyoto urban neighborhood.

Senbon / Kitano side

Closer to Kitano Tenmangu, the atmosphere differs from the Imadegawa Station area. Planning around buses and bicycles can broaden your housing options within Kamigyo.

3. When looking for a home in Kamigyo, do not judge only by the nearest station.

Away from the Karasuma Subway Line, 'X minutes on foot from the station' is not always a good measure of convenience. Many areas work well with Kyoto City Bus or a bicycle, while even a station-adjacent home may be inconvenient if shops or your workplace lie in the opposite direction.

  • Decide whether subway, bus or bicycle will be your main mode of transportDecide this first.
  • Routes that cross Kyoto GyoenWalk them in person, including at the times you would travel and from the entrances you would actually use.
  • Machiya and older buildingsCheck insulation, stairs and the condition of updated equipment.
  • 観光地・寺社周辺Also check weekend pedestrian traffic in person.
  • 自転車置場can make a major difference to everyday convenience.

4. Who Kamigyo suits

People who want a distinctly Kyoto setting without moving to the suburbs. Kamigyo suits people who would rather enjoy historic neighborhoods as everyday life than seek the spectacle of tourist districts; who want Kyoto Gyoen's greenery nearby; and who want to move around central Kyoto by subway or bicycle. If several of these priorities overlap, Kamigyo is a compelling choice.
